Indiana has numerous beaches, lakes, and water parks to visit, but have you ever explored any of the state’s amazing riverwalks? Indiana’s riverwalks let you enjoy the view and scenery of the water while exploring a community or city from the inside. Many riverwalks offer fun ways to travel around the river, allow pets, and even have paddle boats and other water-friendly activities offered on the water. Best of all, all of these riverwalks are completely free to visit! Excited yet? Here are 10 riverwalks (in no particular order) in Indiana that will make your summer unforgettable!
The Indianapolis Canal Walk is located in downtown Indianapolis and spans three miles. This canal walk is littered with restaurants, footbridges, and grassy knolls, as well as unique bicycle and surrey rentals. Want to check out the water up close? No problem. Rent a pedal boat or relax with a romantic gondola ride.
Located in Goshen, in northern Indiana, Millrace Trail is a crushed pebble and stone trail that runs along Goshen's hydraulic canal. This riverwalk, or rather, canal walk, is approximately 2.75 miles long and meets up with the gorgeous Shoup-Parsons woods.
The Pendleton Falls Park Riverwalk is located within this city's park, and runs along Prairie Creek. This riverwalk consists of segments of the park's four different trails and offers spectacular views of Prairie Creek, the nearby woods, and the park grounds. It's also close to the downtown area's best restaurants and shops.
Located in Johnson County, Franklin Greenways provide a picturesque riverwalk for its residents. This riverwalk actually covers two creeks, Hurricane and Youngs Creek, and spans just under 3 miles. Visitors can explore the Blue Herron wetlands and trek across boardwalks within Province Park, where even more attractions can be found.
Elkhart Riverwalk is a beautiful urban riverwalk that goes on for just over 3 miles. Visitors can walk through the most historic part of the city, along High Drive Park, Beardsley Island Park, Pulaski Park, and Bicentennial Park. It's a great walking space for jogging, biking, or just relaxing and walking alongside the stunning river.
The Ohio River Greenway spans over 7 miles and connects three neighboring cities. This riverwalk in southern Indiana is a popular spot for biking and running. it also offers a stunning backdrop for an evening walk with someone special, friends, or family.
The Mishawaka Riverwalk, also known as the River St. Joseph of the Miamis Trail, is a 2.5 mile loops that encircles the St. Joseph River. Pedestrians and bicyclists are both allowed on this trail, as are strollers. Visitors can take in the well-lit sights of Mishawaka while enjoying a peaceful stroll along the water. Visitors can also leave the Riverwalk by one of the many footbridges to travel through one of the nearby parks along the Riverwalk.
The Riverwalk in Jasper, Indiana stretches 2.25 miles and follows the Patoka River. This is a perfect Riverwalk adventure for families and kids and visitors can walk, run, job, and bike across this gorgeous trail.
Another stunning northern riverwalk is the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, located along the famous Indiana Dunes. This riverwalk consists of trails through the dunes, along the lake, and the amazing breakwater. Visitors to this riverwalk can enjoy an amazing lakefront walk through one of the most gorgeous areas in northern Indiana.
Spanning just over 2 miles, the riverwalk in Anderson is a popular place for local photographers to snap images of the scenery and riverside. This is a great riverwalk for exploring Anderson. Along the way visitors will see the Athletic Park (complete with a swimming pool) and Edgewater Park.
