Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
Do you believe in UFOs? Well, considering that sometimes, yes, there most certainly are things in the sky that we simply cannot explain, regardless of their origin – you could probably say that UFOs most certainly do exist. Whether they’re piloted by beings from out of this world or not remains to be seen, though, despite the fact that many Hoosiers throughout the decades have claimed to see strange things in the heavens above. Here are our picks for seven of the very spookiest Indiana UFO sightings!
On October 9, 1973, first responders received more than 700 phone calls reporting bizarre objects in the sky. One such object tracked and observed by Delaware County police officers appeared to be a shimmering array of white, blue, and red lights, not too much unlike their own, and remained in their sights for hours. A nearby airfield in Fort Wayne picked up a strange, anomalous blip on the radar that couldn't be accounted for. To this day, there are no explanations.
Chief air traffic communicator Roy Messmere claimed in 1951 that he "officially believed in flying saucers" after reporting that he'd seen an enormous, metallic object soar across a field below. Three minutes after Messmere radioed in his sensational story, another air traffic officer in nearby Paris, Illinois, also radioed in a report of a large, metallic disc traveling at a high rate of speed. It is unknown what became of the speeding disc.
On August 31, 1994, a group of six men reported witnessing what appeared to be a large, round light glowing among the treetops while they sat around a campfire in the woods near Mongo, Indiana. It hovered toward them, and one of them managed to take a photo of it. To this day it is known as "the Mongo photo," and experts have no reason to believe it was altered in any way.
On April 16, 2008, several residents of Kokomo reported seeing bright lights streak across the night sky, followed by several loud, percussive booms that rattled windows and set off car alarms. So alarming were the booms that local police were dispatched, looking for what they thought might have been a plane crash. Obviously, no plane crash was ever found, and although the military states that it "could have" been aircraft breaking the sound barrier over the town, they also say that they have absolutely no record of any flights or sonic booms that night.
In 2015, residents of Southern Harrison County report seeing a perfectly round, red glow about 100 feet off the ground. It was large, made no noise, and once a man and his truck got close enough to the light, it jetted off in the direction of nearby Crandall, Indiana.
Another bizarre, unsettling sighting in 2015 occurred when an entire family reported watching nine or 10 lights traveling rapidly above the west side of State Road 37. They appeared to fly in a "V" formation until a car approached, at which point the lights scattered like fish when someone taps on the tank glass. The family also reported that their cell phones ceased to work that night.
We've saved the most spectacular for last: Brownsburg resident Matthew Reed claims that he was abducted not once, not twice, but on four separate occasions, three of which occurred when he and his brother were children. The fourth time, Reed stated that he noticed a large, perfectly round orange glow in the sky (interestingly familiar to other accounts in this article), and the next thing he knew, he was sitting outside of his parked car as the light left him there. He had lost an hour and a half of time.
Whether you believe in alien-driven UFOs or not, there’s no debate that some of these firsthand accounts are genuinely rattling. We live in an enormous universe, with so much left unexplored, and you just never really know what might be out there, just beyond our reach.
