Let’s get real for a second: It’s not always easy to find legitimately amazing Mexican food in the Midwest. We’re admittedly a little far from the southern border, but this doesn’t mean truly awesome places don’t exist – we just need to look a little harder for them. In today’s case, I’d like to shine the spotlight on a hidden gem of a place in Indianapolis that’s all too easy to unintentionally pass up: it’s a wonderful nosh spot called Chris’s Ice Cream & Mexican Food, and it’s definitely a one-of-a-kind joint. Of all the hidden gem restaurants in Indiana, this one might just be the most amazing one that’s hidden in plain sight.
Located on 86th Street across from the Aldi grocery store is a strip mall with Chris's Ice Cream hidden inside.
It is WAY too easy to pass this place without even batting an eye; it's not overly fancy from the outside, and even on the inside, it prefers to keep the atmosphere low-key.
It's a quiet little mom-and-pop place with some of the best service you'll ever experience and, of course, some of the tastiest Mexican food in Indiana.
We here at Only In Your State do not throw the term "authentic" around lightly, but Chris's is the very epitome of the term. The entrees here are absolutely on par with the restaurants you'd find in the southwestern states.

Every single menu item is outrageously flavorful and delicious.
Chris's serves up some of the best made-in-house ice cream you'll ever eat right under the same roof, from the same kitchen all the Mexican goodies come from.
It's a very unique combination that most folks would never think to put together.
But Chris most definitely did, and who knew it would turn out so amazingly well? No matter what, I'm forever grateful that this amazing little place is local. My favorite thing might be the mango ice cream, pictured above. Just look at how perfect it is.
For some of the best tacos, burritos, quesadillas and more, be sure to pay Chris a visit at Chris's Ice Cream.
You won't regret it for even a moment - unless you get too full!
Chris’s Ice Cream is open every day except for Sunday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., except for on Mondays when it opens at 9 a.m. instead. For the full menu, specials, and more, be sure to check out the official Chris’s Ice Cream website. What’s your favorite Mexican food restaurant in Indiana? Let me know in the comments!
