Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
Some places are simply timeless. Many of these spots seem to have found their groove long ago and stuck with it. After all, if it works, why change it? There’s one little sandwich shop in Indiana that checks all the boxes as a local classic hiding within Madison. It was established in 1933 – in the same exact place it’s at now – and over the decades, it’s needed to change very little. After all, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it – and Hinkle’s Sandwich Shop was never “broke” to begin with. Take a look at this culinary legend local to small-town Indiana:
From the outside it looks like your typical old-school restaurant, or maybe a New York delicatessen.
It's got that old-school, back-home feel, like somewhere you would have walked into as a teenager with some friends (or a first date).

Mosey right on up to the counter and order your old favorites; Hinkle's Sandwich Shop hasn't altered the contents of the menu for quite some time (and it serves up all sorts of American diner classics).
Our favorite item - and a fan favorite VERY commonly raved about in Hinkle's online reviews - is probably the delicious, hot, and juicy burgers you can get only here. This is one of those places where you order your burger and get to watch it whipped up on the grill right in front of you; it's nostalgic and reminds us of simpler days when we had far fewer worries than we do now.
It's comfort food at its peak, and Madison, Indiana, is all the luckier for it. Folks drive over from all over the Hoosier State just to try the burgers and shakes - and they tend to come back, too, because every meal is amazing and sure to leave you wanting more.
And, if you're ever in for your birthday, you'll get to wear the ultra-fashionable and totally-svelte burger hat.
Monday through Thursday, it's open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays, it's open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
