White Pines Forest State Park in Ogle County is a popular hiking and camping destination that is lesser known to the majority of Illinoisans.
The 385-acre park used to be known as White Pines Woods and was established as a state park in 1927, though activists lobbied for this status as far back as 1900. It was designated as a nature preserve in 2001.
The immaculate forest contains the southern most plot of pine trees that still remain in the state. There are also two freshwater streams and rock formations that will blow your mind.
The nature preserve also contains the south boundary of the historical Chicago-Iowa trail as well as other meandering paths that lead visitors through the woods.
Visitors enjoy hiking, fishing, camping, and picnicking here. There is also a lodge called White Pines Inn with less than two dozen rooms and a restaurant that serves homemade delicacies. A banquet hall and dinner theatre are also available.
Summer, spring, fall, or winter, this magnificent state park will fill you with awe and wanderlust. Make a whole weekend of White Pines Forest with lodging, dining, and epic adventures.
