Few people know that Danville, Illinois is home to the best war museum in the country. It features artifacts from the past 250 years that will absolutely blow your mind.

Built in 1903, the Vermilion County War Museum features displays of memorabilia and artifacts from each war that involved the U.S. From the Revolution to the war in Iraq, this place has it all.
Spanning 14,000 square-feet, this museum is situated inside the old Carnegie Library building, which is a gorgeous, old structure. The museum itself was opened to the public in 1999 after a restoration effort.
Tours are given by volunteers who also help with events and managing the office. If you live around Danville and are interested in joining the team, you can sign up online.
Some of the interesting items you'll find here are a Civil War flag, old newspapers, instruments, and uniforms. You'll get to see pieces of history that actually made it through battle.
The museum is open Tuesday through Friday between noon and 4 p.m. and Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for those under the age of 18, and free for children under the age of 6.
