I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
This year, Chicago’s annual Christkindlmarket will not be held in person, but online from November 1 through December 31, 2020, allowing people from all across the nation to enjoy this authentic German-style Christmas market from the comfort of their own homes. This virtual event is appropriately called “Home For The Holidays” and features an online marketplace, fun events, and interactive activities for the whole family to enjoy.
In normal times, the Christkindlmarket is held outdoors with vendors, German food, carolers, plenty of activities for the entire family to enjoy, and plenty of Glühwein (spiced wine) for the adults.
But, as you know, the year 2020 has proven to be anything but normal. Christkindlmarket has adapted its event this year to go online so that all can participate safely while staying at home.
View the calendar of events so you can pick what demo or activity interests you and jump online when it's time.
Cooking demos, German conversation groups, and storytimes are scheduled throughout the weeks, all for free. Check out the calendar so you don't miss a thing!

Young kids will love attending an online storytime with Christkind herself as she shares German holiday traditions, customs, food, and arts and crafts.
Part of the fun of Christkindlmarket, whether in person or online, is the shopping. This year, guests from around the nation can shop the online marketplace and purchase goods from the Christmas market or an affiliated vendor.
And if you attend the Christkindlmarket in person each year, you may miss walking around outdoors with a cup of hot chocolate or Glühwein. This year, you can make your own at home with a Glühwein spice pack or some hot chocolate mix, both of which can be ordered from the virtual shop. (Side note: they also make great gifts!)
From goodies like roasted nuts, stollen, and gingerbread cookies to German Christmas decor and wine, you may find it all at one of the online marketplace vendors.
Chicago’s Christkindlmarket is a family tradition that continues albeit virtually this year. Join the fun and find the perfect gifts online by visiting their website and ask your friends and family from around the country or globe to join as well!
