I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
If you’ve ever tried rock climbing, you know that it’s not only a challenging workout but a fun, adrenaline-pumping adventure. Upper Limits Rock Gym in Illinois welcomes all skill levels to try its unique climbing walls located in a set of repurposed silos.
Whether you're a serious rock climber or want to try this rewarding activity for the first time, Upper Limits Rock Gym in Bloomington, Illinois creates a unique experience for all who walk through its doors. This location has been open since 1995.
So why set up a climbing gym in a previously abandoned set of grain silos? The owners of Upper Limits believe in repurposing existing buildings as they take a sustainable approach to business. They have even installed solar power and have recycling bins available throughout the gym.
Upper Limits has top-roping, where ropes are anchored from the top of the wall down to the bottom. The climber wears a harness that is tied to one of the ropes and the belayer is attached to the other. In order to use this climbing method, you must pass a belay test or take one of the classes offered at the gym.
Inside Upper Limits Rock Gym, visitors can climb the 65-foot silo walls. There are three round and two uniquely-shaped silos, each with eight or nine top ropes and leadable routes.
You can even climb the 110-foot-tall exterior of a silo. There are both top-roped and leadable routes available during the summer. Another option is to take an elevator to the top and rappel down for an adrenaline-pumping adventure!
Aside from the silo climbing walls, bouldering is another great option at Upper Limits. Since you stay closer to the ground, ropes are not necessary as you climb a short route. Bouldering is a great way to help build strength and technique.
Classes are available for every age and skill level and are worth taking in order to improve your rock-climbing skills and strength. Are you ready to climb the silos at Upper Limits?
