While some of our parks draw in quite the crowd, others are a bit underrated but offer breathtaking gems. Fox Ridge State Park is one of these underrated state parks with plenty to see and do. In fact, here, you can climb a staircase to an amazing overlook known as Eagles Nest. It’s one destination you’ll want to visit for yourself.
Fox Ridge State Park is found in east-central Illinois, just south of Charleston. This park covers more than 2,000 acres. It may not be one of the larger state parks in Illinois, but it sure has plenty to offer.
This underrated park is known for its incredible landscapes. Here, you will find everything from wooded ridges to breathtaking valleys. You’ll find beautiful hills that add a little variety to the scenery in this part of the state.
No matter the time of the year, Fox Ridge State Park is a fabulous place to explore. At this park, you can enjoy picnic and camping opportunities but our favorite activity is hiking.
Fox Ridge State Park offers eight miles of trails to explore, but keep in mind that many are quite steep. You’ll want to do some research on each specific trail before you begin your journey.
There are two routes to reach the overlook. If you are looking for a more rugged adventure or if you want a more moderate journey, both options are available. Just make sure you follow the signs and prepare appropriately for your journey.
The journey to the Eagle’s Nest is wonderful regardless of the time of year. You’ll want to visit during each season to capture the changing views — it truly is remarkable.
