I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. It’s no secret that Illinois is known for hot dogs, specifically Chicago-style hot dogs. If you’re from the Prairie State, you know they’re better than any other hot dog in the country and if you’re visiting, this is something you can’t leave without trying. Although there are plenty of locations where you can get your hands on one of these delicious, mouth-watering hot dogs, a trip to The Dog House in LaSalle, Illinois is worth it.
The Dog House is a mom-and-pop-style restaurant where the owners' passion for hot dogs is obvious. In 2006, they started out by only selling hot dogs, Polish sausage, pizza puffs, fries, and canned soda.
Since its humble beginnings, the menu has evolved and grown exponentially. Although many of the same items The Dog House started with remain, the menu now includes 39 different hot dogs.
Aside from hot dogs, patrons can order appetizers like onion rings, deep-fried pickle chips, mozzarella sticks, and nachos; regular, chili cheese, or pizza fries; or choose one of the many different types of chicken strip or burger entrees.
But the Chicago-style hot dogs are the main reason most people come to The Dog House. Using Vienna Beef brand hot dogs, steamed poppy seed buns, and a variety of toppings, there are some creative choices on the menu for everyone.
All 39 hot dogs on the menu are named after cities across the country. The Chicago hot dog, of course, is the traditional favorite with mustard, onion, relish, tomato, peppers, a pickle, and celery salt.
A Tuscon hot dog has more of a spicy southwest flair topped with cheddar sauce, tortilla chips, and jalapeños, while a New York has just sauerkraut and brown mustard.
There are also 10 different deep-fried hot dogs on the menu such as the Lousiville topped with cheddar sauce, bacon, and onion strings and the Newark with grilled onions, grilled peppers, and fries piled on top. These sound delicious, don't they?
