Ope! From the rural cornfields of DeKalb County, Linze is an Illinois native and true Midwestern gal who can make a mean bonfire and whip up a perfect marshmallow salad. Since 2014, her bylines and photography have appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Magazine, Chicago Sun-Times, and Block Club Chicago/DNAinfo Chicago, Only in Your State, and more. She has interviewed Dolly Parton, written about beloved diners along historic Route 66, visited the last Rainforest Cafe in the Illinois, and reviewed luxurious English manor-inspired hotels. Whether it's writing about a local gem or world-renowned establishment, Linze brings a heartwarming and historical perspective to each story, using facts, wit, and personal experience to impress upon readers the importance of culture, food, travel, and all things local. Her favorite destinations in Illinois include Starved Rock State Park, Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood, the charming small town of Sycamore, and historic Rosehill Cemetery. When she's not writing or photographing, Linze enjoys gardening, spending time with her husband and pets, cooking, baking, and grilling, and relaxing with trashy TV.
In Illinois, we’re lucky to have an abundance of small-town, mom-and-pop restaurants, as well as some of the best world-class dining in Chicago. The unique dining choices in Illinois are plentiful, and I’ve loved everything from a burger in a basic bar to a top-rated steak in a premier restaurant. But, in my experience, all the best meals are served alongside a helping of memories. I love to eat somewhere that will leave a little mark in the scrapbook of my life — something I can later look back on and remember not only the meal, but how it made me feel. And that’s exactly what you get at this one-of-a-kind upscale diner with the best views in Illinois.
The Signature Room is located on the 95th floor of the building formerly known as the John Hancock Building at 875 N. Michigan Ave. in downtown Chicago.
Of course, locals all still call it the Hancock building.
The iconic skyscraper is one of the tallest in the city at 100 stories, which towers 1,128 feet above the ground. It's so tall, that its uppermost floors often get the same view as passing airplanes — an incredible bird's eye view from on top of the clouds.
The upscale restaurant has views that can't be beaten, with sightlines spanning miles away. Whether you're facing the skyline or the lake, your meal will be picturesque inside and out. The dining room is filled with huge, bright windows that almost make it seem like there is nothing between you and the sky.
At night, the city turns into its own twinkling universe of lights that only an elevated experience like that at The Signature Room can provide. Because of this, it's a popular place for Valentine's Day, as well as birthdays and anniversaries — though many people make a reservation to be able to cross it off their bucket list.
The food here is beyond top-notch, with The Signature Room being one of the most popular and critically acclaimed restaurants in Chicago. Diners can enjoy seafood from the raw bar, followed by mouthwatering entrees like half-roasted chicken, short ribs, miso honey-glazed salmon, and ribeye.
And what could be better than a romantic meal on the 95th floor of a historic skyscraper? How about fresh cocktails and delicious fare one floor up at The Signature Lounge on the 96th floor! Bites include elevated appetizers like jumbo shrimp cocktail, pull-apart French bread, Italian sausage pizza, and a Mediterranean snack platter — as well as your choice of desserts like chocolate mousse cake or crème brûlée.
Whether it's an afternoon with friends, a date, or a special occasion, a visit to The Signature Room and its upper-floor lounge will offer the perfect mix of great food, drinks, and views in a city known for all three.
So, do you think The Signature Room will make it to your bucket list as an upscale diner with the best views in Illinois? It certainly has one of the best views in Chicago.
