Scratch-made goodies and fresh lunches abound at this unique cafe. Scroll on for more details.
Bishop Hill Bakery & Eatery in northwest Illinois has been in business since 2005. It is situated in a historic small town that was once a Swedish colony and which is now home to less than 150 residents.
Everything found at this bakery is made from scratch. It is known for both sweet and savory delights. In addition to fresh baked breads and sweets, this place is also popular for its lunch fare.
Most popular are the Swedish meatballs. They are served over a bed of noodles with a side salad and a slice of rye bread. Other meals that are available daily include a vegetarian quiche and several types of sandwiches (i.e. chicken salad, honey ham, roasted turkey, and roast beef).
There are also daily specials that bring locals in on certain days of the week. Chicken pot pies, ham casserole, cream of potato soup, white chicken chili soup, and ham and bean soup are only on the menu certain days, and you'll have to check the menu online (link below) to find out which day is for what.
Now back to the baked goods. Locals love this bake shop for its assorted cookies and scones, coffeecakes, coconut cream pies, cinnamon rolls, lemonberry stacks, and an amazing torte.
Other favorites include a treat called Dems, which are like yeast donuts with streusel on top. There are also Swedish Rusks or "skorpa" which are similar to biscotti.
In addition to sweets, savories, and Swedish meatballs, this bakery is also known for its scratch-made bread. Swedish rye and colony white are its main varieties, but it also sells specialty types like cinnamon swirl, cardamom braid, and spinach Parmesan.
It is truly worth a trip to this fabulous bakery for a quick lunch. Stock up on some fresh bread and sweets to take back home to the special people in your life. The staff here will make sure your experience is simply spectacular.
