If you are looking for attractions, you’ll definitely find some in Chicago and other larger cities. But there are some really amazing things to come see in the smaller towns. Here are seven small Illinois towns you should visit. And what they contain will definitely surprise you!
1. Cave-In-Rock
Why drive down to the bottom of the state? You will definitely want to see this giant cave, which has an opening of 55 feet. You'll definitely want to stay the night in a cabin, which is perched 80 feet over the Ohio River.
2. Casey
Big things come in small packages. The town of Casey--population 2700--knows all about this. They have broken numerous Guinness World Records by creating the largest pen, knitting needle, etc. These gigantic creations are all around town and you should make a trip to take pictures of them all.
3. Odell
Odell once used to be a hopping spot off of Route 66. The population today is just around 1,000. Definitely check out the old Mobil station. You'll want to stop by the Standard Oil station, which has been restored to its old beauty. You'll also enjoy some of the hometown restaurants. It's quaint and you'll have a nice time thinking back on how things once were.
4. Arthur
The heart of Amish country, Arthur has around 2300 residents. There is plenty to do and see here, however, especially if you hit up the downtown area. Here you will find everything from fine clothing to crafts. And don't leave without getting a slice of pie.
5. Galena
More and more people have been figuring out that Galena exists and is awesome. The town population is rather small at 3300. Nevertheless, you can find wonderful restaurants, bed and breakfasts, and plenty of outdoor activities.
6. Collinsville
Collinsville has some pretty cool stuff going for it. You might not know that the world's largest catsup bottle resides in Collinsville. Many people also come here to see the Cahokia Mounds, sophisticated prehistoric construction that will shock you.
7. Savanna
The population of Savanna, Illinois is just under 3,000. It is picturesque, let me tell you. People come from all over to explore the Mississippi Palisades State Park. While you are here, there are plenty of great pubs to get a drink. Definitely check out the Iron Horse Social Club--a bar with a motorcycle museum in it.
