This whole area will have you asking: is this really Illinois? The Shawnee National Forest has all sorts of wonderful hiking paths and trails, none of which tops its crown jewel, the Garden of the Gods.
4. Ravinia (Chicago)
Music lovers rejoice! Ravinia is an outdoor music venue where people bring a picnic lunch and wine. These are not cover bands, either, but some of the best musical acts.
5. Metropolis
Be Superman for a day and head to Metropolis. You'll be blown away by how much the town embraces its Superman ties.
6. Kinkaid Lake (Jackson County)
Sandstone bluff formations surround this gorgeous lake, which is the center of a lot of water activities. There is also a scenic spillway that goes into a pool.
7. Grafton
The town of Grafton has a gorgeous view right at the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. It is a true river town, complete with a delightful Main Street area and wineries.
8. Magic Waters Waterpark (Cherry Valley)
Everyone knows that summer and getting soaked go hand in hand. One of the better waterparks out there is Magic Waters. It includes a great pool, some awesome water slides, and a lazy river.
9. Navy Pier (Chicago)
Yes, it's a tourist trap, but it's a lot of fun. Stay late one night and go on the rides when they are all lit up. Watch the fireworks over Lake Michigan.
10. Tunnel Hill State Trail (Vienna)
This wonderful trail was once a railway. Now, it is an awesome bike trail, taking you through some of the most beautiful countryside Illinois has to offer.
11. Rend Lake (Benton)
This lake is a favorite among campers and those who just want to have a fun day out on the water. If that doesn't float your boat, check out a wonderful dinner theatre and winery that are nearby.
12. Starved Rock State Park (Oglesby)
Wonderful hiking trails wind through canyons, scenic overlooks and wonderful trees. Yes, it will probably be packed, so go early and take it all in.
