Illinois is famous for Chicago, and for all the attractions that city has. But did you know that the most incredible attraction in all of Illinois is several hundred miles south of Chicago? I’m talking about the Shawnee National Forest. With waterfalls, interesting rock formations, and tons of geological history, you’d be a fool not to visit here once.
There are a few waterfalls in southern Illinois. And while Burden Falls, pictured here, only has a 35 foot drop, it is still stunning. A U-shaped canyon makes this intimate and gorgeous.
You also need to visit the Pomona Natural Bridge. It is a 90 foot bridge that is 8 feet wide. It was entirely carved by nature, specifically rivers, many thousands of years ago. There is also a small cave in the area.
There are loads of gorgeous views here, but you cannot miss Inspiration Point. Even people who have been here before can miss this overlook. Wow, you can get such an amazing panoramic view.
Who can miss Garden of the Gods? These rocks make you feel so small. It looks like the rocks were purposely placed here. You won't believe just how large they are until you are standing there.
Wherever you look, there are some incredible views. If you don't have vertigo, certainly step out at Garden of the Gods and check out the view below. You can see for miles and miles.
All across this area, there are interesting rock formations. These rocks were formed over 300 million years ago. Take a trail around the rim of Garden of the Gods, and you will feel like you are among the rocks. Rock formations will make you feel like an ant.
Nothing is more gorgeous than a sunset at the Shawnee National Forest. To be in such a grand area, especially elevated, gives you the feeling of being a god.
