I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
As far as scenic highways and byways in Illinois go, Route 66 is the most iconic. Also known as the Mother Road, Route 66 begins in Chicago and travels westward where it ends at the California coast. Along the way through Illinois, travelers can get their fill of scenery, quirky roadside attractions, and historic eateries like the Ariston Cafe in Litchfield.
The Historic Route 66 scenic byway starts in Chicago at Jackson Blvd. and Lakeshore Dr. It makes its way southwest for approximately 2,500 miles until its termination in Santa Monica, California.
Route 66 travels through numerous small towns in Illinois, many of which offer roadside attractions, gas stations, overnight accommodations, and eateries that may remind you of a bygone era.
Located between Springfield and St. Louis, Litchfield sits along the Mother Road. This small historic city is worthy of a stop -- especially for a bite to eat at the Ariston Cafe.
The Ariston Cafe had its beginnings in 1924 along Route 4, but moved to Route 66 in 1935. Since then, it's been a popular place for travelers to stop and have a bite to eat.
Not only is this historic restaurant a member of the Route 66 Hall of Fame, but it's listed on the National Register of Historic places as well. If that's not enough to get you to stop, the fantastic food will.
Ariston Cafe serves a wide variety of cuisine on its eclectic menu which features American, Italian, Greek, and other international fare. From filet mignon to burgers and nachos to ravioli, there's something for everyone at this wonderful restaurant.
While you're meal may be filling, do yourself a favor and save just a little bit of room for dessert. With homemade cheese pies, cakes, and more, the desserts alone are worth a stop at Ariston Cafe.
