Spring In Illinois
What are some things to do in Illinois in spring?
When spring brings green grass and wildflowers to Illinois, we can't wait to get outside. Here are a few of our favorite things to do in Illinois in spring that we think you'll love too:
- Go waterfall chasing: Illinois has some pretty neat waterfalls that get a big boost of beauty in the spring from winter snow melt. Some of our favorites include the Ferne Clyffe Waterfall in Goreville, Thunder Bay Falls in Galena, Jackson Falls in Ozark, and the stunning Wildcat Canyon Falls in Oglesby. Each of these beautiful spots is a great place to go for a hike and spend some time surrounded by the sound of a rushing waterfall and the awakening world around you.
- Walk with the bluebells in Hidden Acres Park, Homer, IL: Going for a nature walk surrounded by delicate Virginia bluebell blossoms is one of our favorite springtime activities. The Hidden Acres Park Loop is only about three-quarters of a mile long so it is perfect for a quick walk with the family or a spring date idea. The Virginia bluebells bloom between late March and late May so you can come back often in the spring to see them.
- Go birdwatching at the Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary, Chicago, IL: This 13-acre refuge is a hot spot for birdwatching in the spring and fall when many species of birds migrate. Over 300 bird species have been identified here! One of our favorite spots in the refuge is The Magic Hedge - a 150-yard stretch of shrubs, trees, and wildflowers such as honeysuckle. It is a magical place where the sound of songbirds echoes across this natural grassland right on the edge of the city.
Of course, a simple way to enjoy spring in Illinois is to go on a wildflower hike. Here are some of our favorite hiking trails in Illinois. Grab a map from AllTrails+ and start enjoying the warm spring air, the sound of songbirds, and the fresh scent of wildflowers.
