There’s something about Midwest charm that’s hard to define but almost impossible to miss. That’s true in almost every part of Illinois, from the tiniest towns to major cities. In the case of Mount Carroll, it’s a unique combination of history, sight-seeing, and friendliness that make visiting this town a true midwest experience. Here’s more about this small Illinois town that you’ll want to visit soon.
Located in Carroll County, Mount Carroll has a population of nearly 1,700. The area was established in 1841 as a mill town and then was officially incorporated in 1855. Mount Carroll is named for Charles Carrol, who was an original signer of the Deceleration of Independence. Pictured above is the intersection of Main and Market, photographed in 1965.
The town’s motto, "Where we take the time to care," is apparent in the beautiful architecture and friendly storefronts. For a relatively small town, Mount Carroll boasts an impressive array of historically significant buildings. The town’s historic district is made up of 118 acres and since 1980 has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Among these fascinating historic buildings is the Timber Lake Playhouse, which is the longest-standing semiprofessional theater company in the state of Illinois. The town also houses the Raven’s Grin Inn, a prominent haunted house that’s open all year round.
Despite being just two hours away from Chicago, Mount Carroll retains a steady pace of life that is both refreshing and nostalgic. Exploring the main streets of town will allow visitors to stop in quaint tearooms and antique stores.
There’s also a farmers market, photographed above, that takes place every Saturday from 8-12. Even when the weather takes a turn for the characteristically frigid Illinois winters, you’ll still find farmers and craftsmen bundled up, selling their products along this scenic town square.
And if you’re looking for the true midwest experience, you can sign up to stay at Timber Lake Resort. This log cabin accommodation is tucked away on a plot of160-acre land and the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of Mount Carroll.
