Northern Illinois is a land of lakes and gorgeous greenery that draw visitors year-round. Next time you're in the area, take a short drive down Cuba Road.
The road connects the towns of Barrington and Lake Zurich, both of which are affluent neighborhoods where you might not expect so many hauntings in one place.
This mysterious road has been the center of many strange occurrences over the years, and there are several stories often told about this creepy strip of asphalt.
Our first hauntings concern White Cemetery, which has graves that go back all the way to the 1820s. Locals have reported seeing white orbs and other phantom figures on-site. One person reported that the graveyard gates changed from open to closed depending on which way down the road the person drove.
There have also been reports of seeing things that aren't actually there. In the woods near the cemetery, many have reportedly seen a house that disappears when you look at it twice. There actually was a house in this spot at one time, but it burnt down many years ago.
Locals have also told of a woman who flags down passersby and then disappears whenever someone pulls over for her. An additional phantom that is often reported is that of a couple walking arm in arm. Not all ghosts are scary.
Still, some reports are of a dangerous nature, so beware. Some say a ghost truck with its high beams on will try to run you off the road if you drive down it late at night. Others swear that the face of what seems to be a Prohibition-era gangster appears in your rearview mirror as if he's sitting in the backseat.
Another notable aspect of this mysterious road is Rainbow Road, which intersects with Cuba Road. There is an old farmhouse or mansion there that may have once served as an asylum, and you know it's haunted as heck. Drive by some night to see for yourself.
