There is something about this time of year that takes even the most cynical, misanthropic person and makes him throw at least a dollar to charity. But for many of us, giving–whether to church or to charity–is a huge part of our daily lives. We consulted Philanthrophy.com to see which Illinois counties are the most charitable.
Wabash County has about 12,000 people. Its county seat is Mount Carmel and it is located just off of the Indiana border. Wabash County residents are very charitable, giving away around $6 million in 2012.
Edwards County has just under 7,000 people, with its county seat being Albion. The county gave just under $2 million dollars in charitable contributions in 2012, representing over 4% of household income.

Wayne County has about 16,000 people, but those people happen to be very charitable, giving away on average 4.33% to charity.

At the very bottom of the state, Pulaski County ha around 6,000 residents, and incomes are not so high. But charity is very good--the best in the state, actually, at 4.58%. The county combined to give $1 million to charity in 2012.
At just under 20,000 residents, Hancock County might be small but they are big about charity. The median income was around $80,000 in 2012 and they contributed on average $4,300.

Macon County has a population of 100,000 and includes the larger town of Decatur. They made $52 million in contributions in the year 2012.
In Champaign County, the population is fairly large with the University of Illinois located inside its borders. Contributions reflected that, with $111 million given away in 2012.
Just next to Champaign County, Vermillion County has about 80,000 residents. Its county seat is Danville. The total contributions of the county were $20 million.

Jackson County is in southern Illinois and its county seat is Murphysboro. In 2012, the county gave just under $19 million. Households had an average contribution of about $4,000. That represents a giving ratio of 3.63%.
Union County has a population of about 18,000 and is commonly known as "Little Egypt." Household incomes are not much down here, but the median contribution was around $4,000. They gave about $5 million.
We can all give a little bit more than what we’re giving now! There are plenty of people in great need–not just this time of year, but throughout the year.
