There’s a Cold War missile launch site in Addison, Illinois that is now home to a charming park where children play. This historic site was built as a precaution but never actually used for its potential purpose. Its new purpose is utilized regularly, and you can enjoy it too. Check it out:
Nuclear missile launch sites were installed across the country during the Cold War in the 1950s and 1960s, and some were placed in Illinois.
Though there are some unique structures on the grounds, all of the missile equipment was removed prior to it being handed over to the Addison Park District.
All that is left of the missile launch site is the remnants of a control tower, which stands at the northwest end of the park. Everything is in plain sight and reminds some people of a time when America was constantly on standby for international warfare.
Today, the park is a place for old and young alike to enjoy themselves. It is especially nice in the spring and summer when the weather is warm and the grass and trees are green.
Not everyone realizes the history behind this unique and little-known park that is hidden in plain sight in the suburbs of Chicago, but now you'll be able to share it with everyone who visits with you.
If you’ve ever been to this missile launch site park, we’d love to hear from you. Please share your experiences and photos with us below in the comments.
