Ope! From the rural cornfields of DeKalb County, Linze is an Illinois native and true Midwestern gal who can make a mean bonfire and whip up a perfect marshmallow salad. Since 2014, her bylines and photography have appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Magazine, Chicago Sun-Times, and Block Club Chicago/DNAinfo Chicago, Only in Your State, and more. She has interviewed Dolly Parton, written about beloved diners along historic Route 66, visited the last Rainforest Cafe in the Illinois, and reviewed luxurious English manor-inspired hotels. Whether it's writing about a local gem or world-renowned establishment, Linze brings a heartwarming and historical perspective to each story, using facts, wit, and personal experience to impress upon readers the importance of culture, food, travel, and all things local. Her favorite destinations in Illinois include Starved Rock State Park, Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood, the charming small town of Sycamore, and historic Rosehill Cemetery. When she's not writing or photographing, Linze enjoys gardening, spending time with her husband and pets, cooking, baking, and grilling, and relaxing with trashy TV.
As someone who was born on Christmas Eve, I can assure you that I’m a holiday kind of gal. I love the pomp and flamboyance of annual celebrations, especially over-the-top ones like Christmas and Halloween. There is something so fun and special about people coming together, creating their own traditions, and sharing them with the world to enjoy. If you’re a holiday lover like me, then this fall-inspired Mardi Gras festival in Pinckneyville, Illinois needs to be at the top of your travel bucket list.
Located just east of the Mississippi River in Southern Illinois, Pinckneyville is a small town with a population of about 5,000. With historic buildings and a cute local Main Street, it also comes alive in the fall with blazing foliage and plenty of pumpkins.
But October in Pinckneyville also has an unexpected meaning for locals: It's time for the annual Mardi Gras celebration! Although the New Orleans tradition is normally celebrated in February, this Perry County community holds its event on the last Friday and Saturday of October each year.
Make sure you don't miss the parade, which features the Mardi Gras Queen, who is crowned each year. She reigns over festivities such as the business Trick-or-Treat event and kids' costume contests.
On Friday, local businesses set up shop in the Pinckneyville Grade School parking lot to offer up treats, candies, and refreshments to kiddos all dressed up in their best Halloween garb.
And for the collectors: Make sure to grab a T-shirt or hoodie! Each year the festival has a new theme and creates limited merch to show off the holiday spirit. In 2023, the theme is "Let's Glow Crazy."
