The Grand Illinois Trail is 535 miles and loops through the northern section of the state. It covers Lake Michigan, the northern border, the Mississippi River, and the Illinois River.
Illinois' longest bike trail is made up of several other paths and trail systems throughout the state. Additional segments were added beginning in 1992 to connect certain portions of the trail.
Popular subsections of the trail include the Chicago Lakefront Path, the Hennepin Canal Trail, the Illinois Prairie Path, the Great River Trail, the Illinois and Michigan Canal Trail, and many more.
More than 200 miles of the trail is on paved paths or county roads, making it excellent for biking. An annual six-day bike trip takes place in early June for those interested in biking nearly 300 miles of the longest bike trail in the state.
This bike trail is great because you can choose to make your journey as long or short as you please. Whether you enjoy a full day of riding or just a few hours, you'll find it on this path.
Prairies, farmlands, rivers, lakes, forests, as well as bridges, canals, and many more structures and landscapes can be enjoyed along this path. Bikers can see it all in a matter of minutes.
