Built in 1917, The Schweppe Mansion in northern Illinois is tucked away in the woods yet situated right on the shores of Lake Michigan.
This Gothic-style, picturesque mansion is the lapse of luxury and was a gift to Luara Shedd from her father who was well-known for working his way up through Marshall Fields to become chairman.
After her death, she left most of her inheritance to her children, and a very small amount, in comparison, to her husband. Some believe that this may be what caused his suicide.
Four years after his wife's death, the owner of the house was found dead in his bed with a bullet wound to the head and a note that read, "I've been awake all night. It's terrible."
The man was in his 60s and was known to struggle with insomnia and nervousness. Was it possible that isolation, grief, and depression were making things worse as well?
A family took over in the 1980s to renovate the place but divorced before completing the project. The price of this haunted mansion has steadily decreased over time in hopes of attracting a buyer and today sits at about $8.5 million.
