Illinoisans are great at following the golden rule. Whether your car breaks down or you need directions, there's always someone more than willing to help.
Of course, if you ask for directions, you might get the answer in minutes rather than miles. When asked how far up the road something is, most Illinoisans will reply with how long it takes to get there.

Though it's part of what puts us on the map, one of our many habits is digging on the Windy City. Many people forget about the rest of the state due to Chicago's influence.

No one trusts the weatherperson here, so we always wear layers or keep hoodies and jackets stowed away. You never known when the temperature is going to drop, or if the sun is going to come out and heat everything up.
Bread, milk, butter, and other staples fly off the shelves in the event of an impending storm. People get so worried about being trapped in their homes that they stock them up like bomb shelters just to be safe.

While many portions of the state don't experience significant traffic, there are still many cities that do. It has become one of our habits to leave extra early when heading somewhere new.
While the Midwest accent is considered to be the most basic accent in the country, it's still an accent. Further, people from one part of the state sometimes talk differently than other people from other portions.
Illinoisans will cut a single slice of cake in half a hundred times before ever being the one to take the last piece. No one wants to seem greedy, and in the event someone didn't try any yet, there's still some left.

We can't help it. It's in our nature to make jokes at our own expense because we don't take ourselves too seriously. Illinoisans are very realistic about the things that make us great and the things that don't, and we're able to talk about both.
