I am an avid traveler-- of both the United States and the world. My favorite spots are U.S. national parks, big cities, and anywhere I can practice my French. I have traveled to all but a handful of states and enjoy photographing the beauty I see along the way.
Those searching for the perfect day trip in Illinois will find Galena is an excellent choice. The town has kept up its original buildings, so tourists can enjoy its old-timey feel while they shop, eat, or just walk about.
If you prefer more active pursuits, head to the river for some kayaking or paddle boarding. You can also bike or hike along the meandering waterway, and don’t shy away in winter! With a little white stuff, you can cross-country ski the trails, with frosted buildings and trees as a backdrop. Finally, if you want something to do with the kids, wear them down outside before heading indoors to the Galena History Museum. It’s a cool way for all to learn the timeline of this historic place through original photographs and artifacts.
The variety of things you can see and do in a day here will surprise you!
Make the visitors' center at 101 Bouthillier Street the first place you stop. Not only is it nicely restored, but you can get information on what you should do here, from shopping, to eating, and everything else.

Galena's colorful trees make it stunning in the fall.
This quaint place is pretty in all seasons. In winter, its Victorian homes are frosted with snow, while color abounds when trees turn in autumn. Spring and summer bring bright flowers and lush greens.
There are lots of place to stroll in the outdoors here. Take in the scenery from a bridge crossing the river, or get some exercise by looking at pretty homes nestled into the hills and valleys of this midwestern gem.
Awnings adorn downtown storefronts for window shopping in rain or shine.
Stop in at any of 125 independently owned businesses where you can enjoy a meal, sample wine, or purchase sweets (Try Galena Kandy Kitchen at 100 N. Main Street) If your taste buds aren't on your mind, buy a great outfit at a boutique – you sure won't have to worry that your coworker will be wearing the same one come Monday!
The lovely Galena River winds its way through town.
Paddleboarders, canoers, and kayakers alike take advantage of the river for fun and exercise. At 52 miles, it makes a pretty picture both in and out of town.
Once homes for miners, Galena's 19th-century buildings marry aesthetics and durability.
Stop in to the Galena History Museum at 211 S. Bench Street, and you'll learn all about the coal-mining roots of the town. The photos there show that the town has managed to preserve its appealing look for more than a hundred years.
As you can see, there is plenty to pack into a day in Galena, regardless of the time of year. Remember to bring your camera, so you can capture nature at it’s best, a gourmet meal, or a family photo with an amazing background. Approximately three hours from Chicago, and sitting right on the Iowa border, Galena is truly worth the drive.
