Unfortunately, a lot of murders have come and gone in Illinois. But what are the most famous ones? We take a look at eight of the most famous homicides in the history of Illinois.
1. John Wayne Gacy
Gacy assaulted and murdered at least 33 boys and young men in Chicago.
2. Tommy O'Connor
O'Connor killed a police officer and was scheduled to be executed when he escaped. He was never found.
3. August Spies
Spies was one of the people who set off a bomb at police during the Haymarket affair. He was executed for his role.
4. Nicholas Troy Sheley
Sheley killed 8 people with a hammer during one fateful week in 2008.
5. Leopold and Loeb
If you've seen the movie "Rope," you're familiar with this crime. Two wealthy University of Chicago students killed a 14 year old just to see if they could get away with it.
6. William Heirens
Heirens killed at least three people. He was known as the "Lipstick Killer," after leaving a notorious message in lipstick at a crime scene.
7. Johann Otto Hoch
Talk about marriages not working out. Hoch was convicted and hanged for killing one wife...but is suspected of killing FIFTY (yes, really) more.
8. Robert Ben Rhoades
Rhoades is thought to have tortured and killed more than 50 women. He was a trucker and converted his truck into a torture chamber.
Well, those were thoroughly disturbing!
