Morain Hills State Park in McHenry, Illinois, is one of many great options. What sets this park apart is the amount of wildlife you’re likely to see regardless of when you plan your visit.
Located about three miles south of the city of McHenry in northeast Illinois, Moraine Hills State Park is on a 2,200-acre plot of land.
There are over 10 marked trails throughout the park that can be used by hikers, cyclists, and skiers in the winter. The trails vary in length and difficulty, depending on your available time and skillset.
A wide variety of wildlife call the park home, including turtles, coyotes, white-tailed deer, and raccoons. Over 200 species of birds have been spotted in the park, including herons, ducks, and geese.
Archery and shotgun hunting are permitted in the park during their respective seasons. On approved hunting days, the park is closed to the rest of the public for obvious safety reasons.
