I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
Set in the Illinois countryside is a wonderful winery that happens to have several cabins and cottages to rent for a peaceful getaway. If you enjoy wine, scenery, and staying at a relaxing lakeside cabin, then head to Shale Lake in Staunton, Illinois.
The lovely Winery at Shale Lake has a 14-acre vineyard with a heated wine garden, a wine loft, an outdoor patio, six miles of trails, and more. Come here for an afternoon when it's open or spend the night in one of the cabins or cottages.
The Winery at Shale Lake is open March 1 through December 15 on Fridays (from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.) and Saturdays (from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.). The cabins and cottages on the winery's property are open year-round.
The winery has a wide variety of excellent wines to try, all of which were made on site. From a semi-dry red or white to a sweet blush, a semi-sweet rosé, a semi-sweet blueberry, and more, there's a variety for just about everyone who appreciates wine.
For those who prefer beer, there are several domestic and premium options to choose from. Bruschetta, hot appetizers, pizza, sandwiches, and desserts are served at the winery until 9 p.m. when it's open for the season.

The cozy log cabins can be found along the south end of Shale Lake. Each comes with its own screened-in porch, a full kitchen with a stove and microwave, a bathroom, and televisions in both the living room and bedrooms.
Each cabin is different from the next in terms of size and style. Pictured here is the Mule Quarters cabin with its Americana-themed decor. This particular cabin sleeps up to four people with a queen-sized bed along with a sleeper sofa.
During the daytime, feel free to take a kayak or canoe out on the lake. The lake is stocked with fish, so bring your poles if that's something you enjoy doing. The fish are catch and keep, but only keep those you intend to eat.
Cabin rates are based on double occupancy. You can also bring a pet and pay a non-refundable pet fee per stay. In addition to the delightfully unique cabins, there are several cottages available to rent on the property as well.
