The 1960s and 1970s were a time for free spirits and open minds. Curators of the “Sexual Revolution” and protesters of war and government, hippies paved the way for their more modern and chic ancestors. From vegan eats to holistic attractions, there are many things that make this affluent village the best hippie town near Chicago, and you’ll absolutely adore it.
Though you may not find your typical tie-dye-wearing, dreads-sporting, peace-sign-waving bohemians here, there is still much love, with peace and harmony remaining strong guiding principles around town. Check it out:
Northfield, Illinois is a north suburb of Chicago that is known for its high class and stature. It is home to just over 5,000 people, as well as numerous businesses that make it a great place for the modern hippie.
You can start (or end) each day with yoga at North Shore Yoga, where trainers aim to incorporate meditation, chanting, and other holistic rituals. Keep your thoughts open by practicing mindfulness at this popular studio located on Oak Street.
Each week, a new creation is featured, giving you a reason to stop by often. For those who don't eat meat, the Vegetariano is made with crispy potatoes, poblano rajas, portobello mushroom, cotija cheese, and cilantro-lime crema.
Northfield is home to several organic markets as well. In the summer, the best place to find fresh produce and other goods is the local farmers market. Otherwise, there is a Whole Foods where all the modern day hippies flock.
Another fun place to find yourself in this hippie town is this lovely little boutique store. Peachtree Place offers a variety of unique home goods and decor, as well as a plethora of other gifts. Free spirits have been keeping the doors open since 1985.
Of course, another fun activity for open minds and free thinkers is spending time in nature. Northfield contains part of a gorgeous nature preserve with a river and creeks running through it.
If you're in need of a place to stay, keep your experience authentic with an overnight in a neighborhood home. You can rent a whole house and pretend you live the Northfield life.
