Even if you aren’t a baseball fan, or a sports fan, you can appreciate the fact that the Chicago Cubs have been without a win for 107 years. But the story really is bigger than sports. It’s legends, lore, curses, superstitions–all with the hope that this will finally be the year that it comes to an end. We look back at some of the Cubs’ history, along with incidents of “bad luck,” and look forward to the drought finally coming to an end.
1. Murphy the goat
If you know any of the curses, you know about the darn goat. In 1945, William "Billy Goat" Sianis attempted to bring Murphy, a pet goat, to Wrigley Field for Game 4 of the World Series. There was no policy about not bringing a goat to the field, and they were admitted. But they were asked to leave late in the game because they said that the goat stunk. And it was then that Sianis allegedly uttered those fateful words, "The Cubs ain't gonna win no more. The Cubs will never win a World Series so long as the goat is not allowed in Wrigley Field." The Cubs blew the series, and Sianis allegedly sent a telegram saying "Who stinks now?"
2. Black cat of 1969
The Cubs of 1969...my, oh, my. This was considered the best Cubs team EVER. Ernie Banks. Ron Santo. Surely, they would get to the World Series. But in a game against the Mets in September, a black cat ran onto the field and ran circles around Santo before disappearing. We know how that one ended.
3. Buckner's Batting Glove
We all know what happened with Buckner in that infamous play where the ball went between his legs. But what does that have to do with the Cubs? Actually, Santo had played for the Cubs and was wearing his Cubs batting glove for luck during that play. Some believe that this further reinforced the curse.
4. The Steve Bartman Incident
I would be remiss if I didn't put Steve Bartman on this list, but I am not going to put his photo up, as he has suffered enough. It was 12 years ago, guys--let's give him a break. But we can never forget in 2003 when Moises Alou went up to catch that ball and Steve Bartman put his glove out. The Cubs lost their momentum, lost to the Marlins, and were just one game away from getting to the World Series.
It’s been a wild 107 years. What will Chicago look like if the Cubs actually pull it off? Or will there be another curse? We’ll know soon.
