Mound City, Illinois has a fascinating cultural history. The city was given its name by Ohio pioneers in the mid-1800s because the area contained a large number of Indigenous Peoples’ burial mounds. It appears this area was a regionally significant burial site for Indigenous People in the area dating back more than a thousand years. There is a historic home in Illinois that sits above the entire town built atop one such raised section of the earth believed to be a former burial site – the Wall Manor.
The historic Civil War-era town of Mound City is a charming destination for history lovers or anyone who wants to step back in time to the Victorian age. A visit or a stay at the Wall Manor certainly is a must. Have you toured any wonderful historic mansions in Illinois? Tell us all about it with a comment.
