Ope! From the rural cornfields of DeKalb County, Linze is an Illinois native and true Midwestern gal who can make a mean bonfire and whip up a perfect marshmallow salad. Since 2014, her bylines and photography have appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Magazine, Chicago Sun-Times, and Block Club Chicago/DNAinfo Chicago, Only in Your State, and more. She has interviewed Dolly Parton, written about beloved diners along historic Route 66, visited the last Rainforest Cafe in the Illinois, and reviewed luxurious English manor-inspired hotels. Whether it's writing about a local gem or world-renowned establishment, Linze brings a heartwarming and historical perspective to each story, using facts, wit, and personal experience to impress upon readers the importance of culture, food, travel, and all things local. Her favorite destinations in Illinois include Starved Rock State Park, Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood, the charming small town of Sycamore, and historic Rosehill Cemetery. When she's not writing or photographing, Linze enjoys gardening, spending time with her husband and pets, cooking, baking, and grilling, and relaxing with trashy TV.
Just because winter is nearly here, we as Illinoisans know that outdoor time is only getting started. From sledding to skiing to snow angels, we’re not afraid to suit up and get out. I loved making snow forts and slides as a kid, and with the vast number of local and state parks across the state, enjoying the wintry weather is especially easy in Illinois. In fact, for some of the best cross-country skiing in Barrington, Illinois, this hidden gem forest preserve is a must-visit.
Beverly Lake is located in Barrington Township near Dundee and is part of the greater Forest Preserves of Cook County system. In warmer months, it's a lush, green nature escape — and in the winter it turns into a snow-covered wonderland perfect for cross-country skiing.
Specifically, the 2.4-mile Beverly Lake Forest Preserve Trail loop is known among local skiers as a serene place to spend a morning or afternoon. The trail is considered moderately challenging and takes just under an hour to complete. Leashed dogs are welcome to join you (a cute coat and booties are optional, but encouraged!).
The gorgeous scene is a "hidden gem," according to John McCabe, the Forest Preserves’ director of resource management. “Visitors here can anticipate seeing deer, small mammals like squirrels and rabbits, and I would not be surprised if they saw coyotes — it’s remote and quiet,” he said.
“It’s a great birding location, too," he added. "There’s a small pine plantation that was part of a re-forestation initiative, visitors can spot different species of birds like great-horned owls.”
Because of this, those in the know enjoy strapping into their skis and snowshoes after it snows, winding around the lake and through the forest.
While many winter activities involve over-the-top Christmas displays and maximized holiday decor, a day of cross-country skiing at Beverly Lake offers just as much joy and beauty but without all the noise.
