Ope! From the rural cornfields of DeKalb County, Linze is an Illinois native and true Midwestern gal who can make a mean bonfire and whip up a perfect marshmallow salad. Since 2014, her bylines and photography have appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Magazine, Chicago Sun-Times, and Block Club Chicago/DNAinfo Chicago, Only in Your State, and more. She has interviewed Dolly Parton, written about beloved diners along historic Route 66, visited the last Rainforest Cafe in the Illinois, and reviewed luxurious English manor-inspired hotels. Whether it's writing about a local gem or world-renowned establishment, Linze brings a heartwarming and historical perspective to each story, using facts, wit, and personal experience to impress upon readers the importance of culture, food, travel, and all things local. Her favorite destinations in Illinois include Starved Rock State Park, Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood, the charming small town of Sycamore, and historic Rosehill Cemetery. When she's not writing or photographing, Linze enjoys gardening, spending time with her husband and pets, cooking, baking, and grilling, and relaxing with trashy TV.

With a mix of urban, suburban, and rural landscapes, Illinois has tons of great places to stay throughout the state. Sometimes, though, you just want to pack up your family and get some much-needed outdoor time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A week spent fishing, swimming, and stargazing can do a lot to rejuvenate the soul, and what’s better than making memories with family? That’s why I think this vacation home rental in Effingham, Illinois is the perfect place to gather up loved ones for a peaceful, yet unforgettable getaway.
Redbud Cottage is an adorable 1,500-square-foot A-frame home located just off Lake Sara in South Central Illinois. With three bedrooms and two bathrooms, it has the capacity to sleep 12 (six of which can be adults), making it a great destination for families.
The home includes a swimming beach, a floating dock for lake jumping, a private boat dock, plenty of space for fishing, a canoe, and five kayaks. Plus, outdoor patios perfect for sipping coffee, wine, or having a meal.
Of course, all the modern amenities like Internet, A/C, and cable are available — plus a washer and dryer and a two-car garage to make your stay even easier.
Each of the three bedrooms includes a King-size bed, and there are sleeping couches and sleeping bags for the kiddos, as well as a crib for a baby. Upstairs is the main suite to offer some privacy, while the other guest rooms are on the main floor.
On average, the home rents for $155 a night. This is one vacation Fido will have to sit out though, as pets aren't allowed at the property.
The fully-equipped kitchen was remodeled in 2021 and offers all the dishes and cookware you need to enjoy nearly any kind of meal together. A French press and Keurig coffeemaker are also there to get your day started, and a dishwasher is on hand to make nighttime clean-up easy-peasy.
The 2.5-story living room offers high ceilings and plenty of cozy space to spend time next to the warm fireplace. Grab a book from the home's stack and enjoy a relaxing afternoon or evening getting lost in the pages.
