I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
If you’re looking for accommodations and want to stay somewhere a little out-of-the-ordinary, there’s a bed and breakfast in Chicago like nowhere else you’ve stayed before. Run by monks, the Benedictine Bed and Breakfast guarantees a quiet and peaceful stay despite its location in the city.
Located in Chicago, the Monastery of the Holy Cross is one of only a handful of urban monasteries in the country. It was founded in 1988 by Benedictine Monks who took over a former parish church in the city. Over the years, they have continued to restore the property and have even added a bed and breakfast.
The Benedictine Bed and Breakfast has two suites to choose from: the Garden House Apartment and the Loft Apartment. Included with your stay are private parking, WiFi, a TV with a DVD player, and air conditioning. You're also invited to the church where you can attend one of the monks' famous Gregorian chant services.
The Loft Apartment has seven rooms total with three bedrooms that can sleep up to five guests and a kitchenette, all under actual cathedral ceilings! In the morning, you can enjoy a hot breakfast cooked and served by the monks.
The Garden House Apartment sleeps up to five people and has two bedrooms, a living room complete with a sleeper sofa, and a full kitchen. The monks stock the fridge with items to cook your own breakfast in the morning.
The cost of each suite is $180 per night for up to two guests and $40 for each additional adult. There's a charge of $25 for teens over the age of 16 while children under age 16 are free.
The monastery's bed and breakfast is walking distance of plenty of restaurants and cafes but provides a quiet, peaceful retreat you may be looking for in the city. It's heavenly, to say the least!
Are you intrigued by the idea of spending the night at a monastery? If you’ve stayed here before, please tell your fellow readers all about your experience in the comments!
