I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
Do you want to go kayaking but have either never tried it or just started? In either case, kayaking through rapids is probably not something you’re ready for, so we have a suggestion for you. With its calm waters, the Hennepin Canal may be the best beginner-friendly kayaking destination in Illinois. Read on to find out why.
The 104-mile Hennepin Canal is a waterway that offers visitors plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, including kayaking. It is located within Hennepin Canal State Park.
With calm waters like glass, Hennepin Canal is an easy waterway to navigate. That is one big reason it's perfect for those who are just learning how to kayak.
The water depth along most of the canal is just six feet, which may ease a beginner's mind as well. And the current is so mild, kayakers barely notice.
While kayaking is a great form of exercise for the back and shoulders, it is also quite relaxing. As you paddle along, you can't help but notice all the nature that surrounds you.
Please note: since the locks along the canal are no longer in operation, you will have to portage your kayak in between them. However, this will just add to the experience of kayaking along the Hennepin Canal!
If you don't wish to kayak, canoeing is another great option. Keep in mind, too, that boats with motors can be used between several locks along the canal.
Have you kayaked along the Hennepin Canal? Do you know of another beginner-friendly kayaking destination in Illinois? If so, tell us about it in the comments! For more information, visit the Hennepin Canal State Park web page and Facebook page.
