I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
There’s nothing more peaceful than an escape to the countryside to surround yourself with open land and let your cares and worries melt away. It’s no wonder why farm stays have become more and more popular over the years. To find accommodations in a rural setting on a farm with animals, flowers, or fruit and vegetables, or one that has a long history, your experience will be one of a kind. Walnut Grove Farm in Knoxville, Illinois is a farm with a long history that has earned it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places and you can spend the night at its bed and breakfast.
Walnut Grove Farm had its beginnings in 1835 by the Charles family who moved to Illinois to make a living by farming on the prairie. They started a cattle farm and by 1890, they had acquired over 1,200 acres of land.
The barn, which still stands today and has been restored, was built in 1865. What was once used to house cattle is now used for weddings and other special events.
This 19th-century homestead may no longer be the cattle farm it once was, but it has preserved much of its country charm. If you're looking for a relaxing getaway, there's a bed and breakfast bungalow on the property.
When the weather gets warm, the gardens will be in bloom. Take a walk around the picture-perfect property and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. After all, this is what country living is all about!
