There’s nothing quite like taking a ride on a train. It’s amazing to think that trains used to be the main mode of transportation in the country. Trains were definitely a major part of Illinois’ development. So if you get the opportunity, hop on one of these trains for a great experience:
1. Fox River Trolley Museum (South Elgin)
You can take a couple of different train rides at the Fox River Trolley Museum. One of the rides that gathered a lot of attention was a reenactment of Nazi occupied France--a real education along with a ride. The kiddos enjoy the holiday themed rides.
2. Monticello Railway Museum (Facebook)
This organization is completely run by volunteers who host an operational railroad yard. Rides are open to the public through October.
3. Pullman Rail Journeys (Chicago)
For a first-class train riding experience, you should go with Pullman. Just look at this dapper gent ready to serve you. And hey, it doesn't hurt that the final destination is Miami!
4. Silver Creek and Stephenson Railroad (Freeport)
From Memorial Day through October, you can take rides on this vintage vessel on 1.72 miles of track. People love riding the train in October, referred to as the "Train of Terror."
5. Illinois Railway Museum (Union)
This organization, run by volunteers, offers rides on steam trains and trolleys.
6. Blackberry Farm (Aurora)
Located in beautiful Blackberry Farm, especially beautiful this time of year, this small train ride takes you for a short trip around the property and is something the kids are sure to love.
I can’t wait to go on a train ride this fall!
