While it might seem as if the Midwest hibernates during these chilly months, winter doesn’t have to be a season of being stuck inside fighting off cabin fever. We have the cure for what ails you! There is something in the beauty of a wintry paradise that should be enjoyed and not given the cold shoulder. Sure, it’s cold (okay, it’s really cold) but you’ll truly miss out on some spectacular winter wilding if you don’t go to Starved Rock at least once this season.
Nestled near Oglesby, this well-known summer oasis can now be your favorite winter destination as well. With over 2,630 acres and 582-acres of natural preserves there is so much to see and enjoy about this gorgeous Illinois park, even during the chillier months.
Do you love trekking the trails taking in the beauty of nature blanketed by a lush layer of pure white snow? If you are a solo adventurer then venture off onto the hiking trails by yourself and take in the serene and quiet world around you (it’s certainly a welcome reprieve from the daily grind of the regular workweek). There is something about the landscape and nature of Starved Rock during the winter that gives you a deeper appreciation for the beauty of our great state.
If you have a preference for group activities you can enjoy year-round trolley tours of the park and even guided hikes with beautiful views of canyons and breathtaking waterfalls. Winter is also the perfect time to do some eagle watching.
When the conditions are just right you can take in a little ice climbing, as well. Yes, you read that right. Of course, in order to ice climb in Starved Rock you want to contact the Park Office first. They will be able to give you the skinny on when conditions are ideal for ice climbing.
Did you think you would have to make plans to head out of town in order to get in some good skiing? While Starved Rock is certainly not a traditional ski resort you can still take in the sights and sounds of the park while enjoying this fun winter activity. Plus you can also head to the Matthiessen State Park nearby to further satiate your ski cravings.
Once you’ve thoroughly had your fill of the snowy elements and you’re ready to hunker down consider warming those tootsies by the fireplace in the Great Hall before heading to your cozy room at the Starved Rock Lodge. If you prefer a more rustic approach, you can also stay in one of the 21 cabins that are tucked away within these tranquil woods. Enjoy meals at the Main Dining Lodge with a toasty fireplace or listen to live music every Friday night at the Back Door Lounge.
There are some truly beautiful natural sites and parks in our state that it’s hard to visit them all during the winter, but if there is another incredible park that we would be remiss not to check out during the snowy months then we want to know about it.
