There are few things more heavenly than witnessing one of Idaho’s picturesque waterfalls. But have you ever considered swimming beneath one? This waterfall-fed pool can be found deep in the Idaho backcountry, but you’ll be so glad you went out of your way for it. The waterfall is actually composed of three different waterfalls, and one of them boasts a lovely little pool that is perfect for soaking in! You’ll spend hours cooling off in this beautiful natural pool and taking in the abundant views.
Have you heard of Elk Creek Falls? It should definitely be on your radar considering it's the tallest waterfall in all of Idaho. The waterfall is broken up into three sections and even boasts a lovely swimming pool that you'll often find locals soaking in on a hot summer day.
You can visit the waterfall via a hiking trail in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest near the small town of Elk River. The two-mile loop trail contains smaller trails that branch off and take you to each of the three falls. The trail is well-maintained and mostly flat making it great for families.
You'll delve deep into the forest as you get farther and farther along the trail. It isn't long until you're totally surrounded by the most beautiful pine trees and greenery. It definitely feels like a fairytale setting.
You'll come across the Upper Falls first. This is by far the most popular of the three falls since it's easiest to access and you can get closer to it than any of the other falls.
You'll spot a narrow trail that branches off from the main trail. This trail takes you all the way down to the natural swimming pool at the base of the falls. This is a popular spot for locals to swim in during the summertime since the water is perfectly refreshing on a hot day.
This may be a well-known swimming spot but it's not officially designated. If you do decide to swim, be sure to use caution and know your own swimming abilities. The water can become quite swift at certain times of the year and potentially dangerous.
If you find that the Upper Falls pool is too crowded, you can find another swimming hole in between the middle and lower falls. The Middle Falls cascades for over 90 feet, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Idaho. Can you imagine swimming at the bottom of it?
The hike to Elk Creek Falls is a unique adventure that is sure to be one for the books. The three separate falls beg to be explored and make for a one-of-a-kind swimming spot that you'll fall in love with.
