One of the best parts about living in Idaho is all of the incredible and easily accessible state parks waiting to be explored. Many people choose to experience Idaho’s state parks by setting up camp or setting off on one of their many hiking trails. However, the most popular way of exploring Mary McCroskey State Park is via car. One of the most prominent features of McCroskey State Park is the 18-mile long Skyline Drive. This rugged road takes you to some of the most breathtaking scenic overlooks of the park and is perfect those seeking an unforgettable adventure within the comfort of their own vehicle.
McCroskey State Park is located in Idaho's panhandle approximately 25 miles north of Moscow. Its location within the breathtaking Palouse region is characterized by vast rolling hills. The park is 5,300 acres, making it Idaho's second largest state park.
The park's main attraction is the well-known Skyline Drive, an unimproved road that winds along a steep ridge and therefore providing some of the most exquisite views of the surrounding vistas.
The first portion of the road leads you through a beautiful forested area surrounded by cedar and ponderosa pine trees. It isn't long before the road leads you to some of the most gorgeous views of the Palouse you've ever seen.
You'll likely be full of awe as the road gives way to the expansive views of the praire below. At a peak elevation of over 4,000 feet above sea level, the view doesn't get much better than this!
Skyline Drive also provides access to 32 miles worth of hiking and biking trails, for those who wish to step out of the car for a bit and explore the area by foot. The area is downright gorgeous all year long and is open year round, but the road is not maintained during winter and snow may block some points of access.
There are also nine campgrounds within the state park, along with several primitive camping spots. The remoteness of this gargantuan park makes it an awesome place to set up camp for a few days (or more than a few, most likely).
You don't have to be an outdoor enthusiast to experience the outrageous beauty of McCroskey State Park. All you need is a reliable vehicle that can take some mildly rugged terrain. There's no better way of taking in the boundless plains of the Palouse praire. Who knew this little slice of heaven was hiding right here in Idaho?
