There is no doubt that there are some pretty unique towns scattered around the United States. In fact, there are some pretty incredible towns in the Gem State. But, there is one small town that is often overlooked on these lists — Salmon, Idaho. This small town in central Idaho has approximately 3,000 residents, the most beautiful surroundings, and a history that many people don’t know about.
As you drive into Salmon, you’ll immediately fall in love. This small town is located along the Salmon River and has views that are absolutely mesmerizing.
The Salmon Valley is known as the birthplace of Sacajawea, a Lemhi Shoshone woman who assisted Lewis and Clark on their expedition. In the early 1800s, Lewis and Clark entered the Salmon Valley and spent time receiving supplies and exchanging information from Sacajawea’s people.
Throughout the years, Salmon has established itself as a place for mining, ranching, and lumbering. Today, as you drive down Main Street, you’ll see these traditions reflected in the architecture of this unique Idaho town.
For those who want to relax, if you travel just outside of this small town, you can visit Goldbug Hot Springs. There is a difficult 3.5-mile hike to reach the springs but once you arrive, it’s heavenly.
You can learn more about the Goldbug Hot Springs here.
You’ll realize that you are truly someplace unique as you begin to explore and experience the scenery of the Salmon Valley. One of the best ways to capture the views of this area is along the Salmon River Scenic Byway.
As you travel on this scenic byway, you will visit ghost towns, enjoy breathtaking views of the Salmon River, and experience the Sawtooth Mountains like never before.
When hunger strikes on your day trip in Idaho, stop by the Junkyard Bistro. You’ll find an extensive menu filled with American cuisine, and you can always order a beer or a glass of wine to complete your meal.
