Craters of the Moon has long been heralded as one of Idaho's best day trip destinations. However, did you know you can actually camp here as well? Lava Flow Campground is just as unique as its name suggests and you'll definitely want to spend a night here.
Lava Flow Campground is opened from mid-April through November, so start making some camping plans pronto! It's the only developed campsite within the park and there are 42 sites in total, available only on a first-come-first-served basis.
The campsite itself is like something from a different world. The entirety of the campground is surrounded by a young lava flow near the visitor center, and it's simply unlike anything you've seen before. For a moment, you may just forget you're in Idaho.
The campground's scenery is filled with oddly-shaped volcanic rocks, rugged flows of lava, and jagged hills in the distance. The one-of-a-kind views make Lava Flow Campground a hoppin' spot during camping season, so expect to have some company if you intend to visit during the busy season.
Despite the rugged landscape, the campground is actually very well-maintained. There are two sections to choose from: the back section which has smaller sites, and the front section which is suitable for RVs and campers.
Of course, the campground gives you prime acessibility to Craters of the Moon National Monument. Hiking trails, caves, and the visitor center are all located nearby, so adventure is always around the corner.
