Here in Idaho, adventure can be found all around us—even right underneath our feet. Exploring all of the Gem State’s different caves offers up an endlessly exciting experience. From the state’s famous Mammoth Cave to the lesser-known gems hiding out in the middle of nowhere, each cave has something unique to offer. However, Tea Kettle Cave may be one of the most unique in the state and it will simply leave you in awe of what Mother Nature is capable of. There's a seriously amazing underground cave hiding out just north of Gooding, Idaho and visiting it is a must for all nature lovers. Tea Kettle Cave, also known as Teapot Cave, is a destination that is just as photogenic as it is awe-inspiring.
Much of Southern Idaho is covered in underground caves that were left behind as a result of volcanic activity millions of years ago. Finding one of these caves always makes for an interesting adventure and the highly coveted Tea Kettle Cave is an especially fascinating place to visit.
Keep in mind that visiting Tea Kettle Cave is definitely a rugged adventure, so a high clearance vehicle and sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended. You'll find the cave off of Canal Road, in between the towns of Gooding and Bliss. A short hike is required to reach the cave once the dirt road becomes too rocky to drive on.
Getting into the cave itself also requires some effort. Upon arriving at the cave, you'll soon see why it's named after a tea kettle. The cave's opening resembles the "spout" of a teapot. You'll have to climb down the spout carefully, as it's known to be a bit slippery.
Once at the bottom of the cave, you'll be struck by the breathtaking scene before you. At the base of the cave is a pile of rocks covered in lush green ferns. Whatever you do, be sure NOT to step on the ferns so that they can continue to grow in this unique setting.
The opening of the cave directly above the grove of ferns is an extraordinary sight. The bright green color of the ferns makes for a stark contrast to the barren desert scenery that surrounds the cave, and it's a great reminder of the amazing things that nature is capable of!
Seeing Tea Kettle Cave and the beautiful oasis of ferns inside of it is a must for any adventurer. Just be sure to use caution when you visit this remote destination. Keep an eye out for rattlesnakes (especially near the entrance), and Leave No Trace so that we can continue to enjoy this underground cave for years to come.
