There is nothing better than a perfectly prepared pie. The flakey crust, delicious filling, extraordinary flavors – it’s making our mouths water just thinking about it. Here in Idaho, there are some incredible pie shops all around the state that have perfected their pie-making process. So, we have created this pie shop road trip to taste some of the best pies in Idaho. While we are fortunate to enjoy delicious pies all over the state, this road trip focuses only on the panhandle. It’s a trip that is certainly sweet!
This road trip begins in Sandpoint and travels down to the small town of Deary, near Moscow. You will travel approximately 215 miles and should plan for at least 4.5 hours of drive time. While it is certainly short enough that you could complete the drive in a single day, we suggest breaking this adventure into two days.
Our road trip begins at one of the most well-known pie shops in northern Idaho - The Pie Hut. This pie shop may be small but it's delightful in every single way. You can order an entire pie or just a slice, and there are multiple flavors to choose from each day. We recommend trying a slice of the huckleberry pie. People have visited this pie shop from all over the country just to have a piece!
You’ll have to drive a bit out of the way to try the pie at this small-town bakery, but believe us, it will be worth it. At Clark Fork Pantry, you will find all-natural, homemade, and preservative-free baked goods. There's a variety of pie flavors on the shelves every day, including many popular flavors like apple, peach, and cherry. You may want to grab a few other delicious baked goods for the road as well.
Birdie’s is a delightful pie shop that specializes in all types of pies from cold and warm and savory and sweet. There are multiple locations in the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene region, but for this road trip, we are stopping at their location in Post Falls. Here, you will find many traditional pie flavors like apple and key lime, but we suggest checking out the savory options like taco pie, spaghetti pie, and the drool-worthy pulled pork macaroni and cheese pie.
Be prepared to make a tough decision as you must choose between nearly two dozen pie flavors at Olive’s Pastry at the Pie Barn. This charming northern Idaho bakery offers quite the selection but regardless of what you order, the crust is what will leave you impressed. Olive’s Pastry at the Pie Barn is known for its flaky, buttery crust and you need to try it for yourself.
Bean and Pie is an adorable pie shop located in Coeur d’Alene. All of the pies are made from scratch and you’ll find quite an extensive menu. You can order whole pies and sweet or savory hand pies. Make sure you purchase a pie cup or two for the road. This is essentially a deconstructed pie that features layers of pie filling, crumb or topping, and whipped cream.
Located in a historic building on Deary Main Street is a bakery that makes all of its pies just like how your grandma makes them: handmade, packed with filling, and extremely flavorful. The pie selection at Pie Safe Bakery & Kitchen rotates so if you choose to stay in town for a few days before venturing home, make sure you stop in to see what new flavors may be on the menu.
