It’s always a good time to start planning your next family field trip. A museum is just the place to go when you feel like an experience as entertaining as it is informative, and this one in Nampa is especially worth checking out. The Nampa Train Depot Museum is housed in an authentic train depot that was built over a century ago. Inside, you’ll feel as if you’ve fallen into a time capsule as you explore the old items and artifacts of yesteryear. Check it out the next time you feel like delving into Idaho history!
First opened in 1903, the Nampa Depot hasn't seen any train action in nearly a century. However, there's still plenty to do and see at this historic structure, as it's home to a museum that will transport you back to Idaho's early days.
The 1903 depot is noted for its interesting architecture, specifically its combination of Romanesque, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. It operated as a station until 1927 when a new depot was constructed. It became the headquarters for the Canyon County Historical Society in 1973, which still manages it to this day.
Thanks to the Canyon County Historical Society, this amazing piece of Idaho history is still alive and doing well. The non-profit organization is 100% staffed by volunteers who are dedicated to preserving this part of Nampa's history for years to come.
The Nampa Train Depot Museum is open Fridays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free for members and kids 0-6, $2 for kids 7-17, $3 for adults, and $2 for seniors.
Inside, you'll feel as if you've stepped into a time capsule of Idaho in the early 20th century. A variety of exhibits and displays work together to depict Canyon County history, with a focus on the agricultural and railroad industries.
A museum gift shop is available that's full of books by local authors, railroad-themed items, gifts, clothing, and more. Whether you're a diehard train enthusiast or have a casual interest in local history, this quaint but informative museum is bound to inspire.
Step into the past and explore a piece of Idaho history that's only getting older. Visit the website for Canyon County Historical Society for more information about the organization and the museum.
