Spring in Idaho is refreshing. There’s something magical about the arrival of warm weather, the colorful blooms lining hills and hiking paths, and more sunlight to enjoy throughout the day. This is the time of the year that many Idahoans (myself included!) start itching to get outside and enjoy some of Mother Nature’s glorious creations. Fortunately, there are hundreds of things to do in Idaho in spring. From outdoor adventures to beautiful scenery, there is no shortage of Idaho spring activities and places to visit. The following are just 14 spots to help you enjoy this highly-anticipated time of the year.
Flower Blooms In Idaho
Spring in Idaho means one thing — remarkable flower blooms. From the panhandle to the small towns in southern Idaho, you can witness remarkable flower blooms that will take your breath away. The seas of color create a picturesque scene that you won’t want to forget and you’ll want to enjoy year after year. The following are three of the best flower blooms in Idaho.
1. Camas Lily Bloom
The most popular flower bloom in Idaho is the Camas Lily Bloom at the Camas Prairie-Centennial Marsh WMA. During this incredible natural wonder, meadows transform into seas of purple that are photo-worthy and a great reminder of Idaho's history. You won’t want to delay visiting as the weather can determine how long this gorgeous scene lasts. Just make sure you keep your eyes out for wildlife — humans aren’t the only creatures that want to enjoy this Idaho flower bloom.
2. Craters Of The Moon Wildflower Bloom
Visiting Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is one of the best family things to do in Idaho in spring. During this time of year, you can beat the crowds and the scorching temperatures as you explore the lava rocks. But, even better, you can also witness the spring wildflower bloom. Every year, colorful blooms appear, creating a stark contrast in the dark lava flow. Tackle one of the hikes to get an up-close view or simply go for a scenic drive — either option will be beautiful.
3. Canola Bloom
It is no secret that I love the Palouse and while I would visit any time of the year, spring is a particularly beautiful sight when it is covered in canola flowers. These bright yellow flowers create an appearance that looks like rolling waves. Keep in mind, however, that canola blooms are typically not found in the same place year after year. You may have to explore the Palouse to find this gorgeous sight.
Botanical Gardens In Idaho
There is no better way to spend a spring day than walking through a botanical garden. While there are not many botanical gardens in Idaho, the ones we do have deserve a spot on every spring bucket list. The following three destinations are some of the best gardens and romantic things to do in Idaho in spring.
4. Idaho Botanical Garden
The Idaho Botanical Garden in Boise is the most well-known and popular garden in the state. Approximately 15 acres in size, here you can admire thousands of plants and visit multiple specialty gardens including a rose garden, children’s garden, and the Lewis and Clark Native Plant Garden. The Idaho Botanical Garden also hosts events throughout the year, giving you even more reason to stop by and admire.
5. Sawtooth Botanical Garden
Located near Sun Valley is the Sawtooth Botanical Garden. At approximately 5 acres in size, this destination is organized into five gardens that represent the five biomes of south-central Idaho. There’s also a visitor center and greenhouse and unique attractions like a Sawtooth Sandbox. The Sawtooth Botanical Garden is a fabulous spring day trip destination. Just make sure you stop and admire views of the Sawtooth Mountains — they provide the perfect backdrop to this garden.
6. University of Idaho Arboretum and Botanical Garden
My favorite botanical garden in Idaho is easily the U of I’s arboretum in Moscow. This 63-acre area is a nature lover’s paradise with thousands of plants and flowers, gorgeous trail to explore, water features, a beautiful barn, and sights of the Palouse in the distance. Walk around the garden or simply find some green space and enjoy the peace and quiet. You may even see rabbits hopping around as you explore. This is easily one of the best cheap things to do in Idaho in spring.
Parks To Visit In Idaho This Spring
Spring is the perfect time to grab your family and explore. While there are many city parks throughout the state where you can enjoy a little fresh air, sunshine, and greenery, the following are three destinations that will make you fall in love with the spring months in Idaho. They may not be your traditional parks but they each have something truly unique to offer.
7. Shoshone Falls Park
Shoshone Falls Park is not only where you’ll witness the mesmerizing Snake River Canyon, but it’s also where you can see one of the largest natural waterfalls in the USA — Shoshone Falls. And while the falls are breathtaking any time of the year, in the spring, when the snowpack begins to melt, the falls begin to truly roar and take your breath away.

8. Ritter Island State Park
Ritter Island State Park is one of the units that comprise Thousand Springs State Park. It may be one of our favorite state parks in Idaho to visit during the spring, especially when you realize the natural beauty that is hiding here. Take in the views of the springs flowing down the Snake River cliffs, take tours of the historical sites on the island, admire wildlife, and so much more. If you visit in the late spring when the weather is warm, you may even want to hop in a kayak and paddle around — this area is pure bliss.
Spring Hikes In Idaho
If you are like me, by the time spring arrives in Idaho, I am anxious to lace up my hiking boots and spend some time outside. In the Gem State, there are dozens of incredible spring trails for hikers of all ages and abilities. The following are just four of the best trails in Idaho in spring.
9. Table Rock Trail
Table Rock Trail is one of the most popular hikes in Treasure Valley. This is a loop trail that takes you to a stunning overlook of the valley. Your journey won’t be too long but it can be challenging as there are some steep inclines you must conquer. However, once you reach the top, you’ll be glad you made the trip. It is beautiful here.
10. Boise River Greenbelt
The Boise River Greenbelt is perfect for an afternoon stroll in Treasure Valley. This paved path is 25 miles and ideal for walking, running, cycling, and even rollerblading. It connects multiple cities and more than a dozen parks. Plus, it is beautiful every step of the way. The Boise River Greenbelt is an absolute must during the spring and was even named one of the best river walks in America.
11. Creekside Towers Trail, City of Rocks National Reserve
City of Rocks National Reserve is one of our favorite destinations in southern Idaho. While there are several trails that are perfect for exploring, we are particularly fond of the Creekside Towers Trail in the spring. This trail is approximately one mile and makes for a perfect family-friendly adventure. You will hike to incredible rock formations and stunning views — this may just become your new favorite hike in Idaho.
12. Cress Creek Nature Trail, Ririe
Cress Creek Nature Trail is a beautiful path that takes you along the South Fork of the Snake River. Along your way, you’ll pass small streams, receive remarkable views of the Snake River, and walk next to all types of flora and fauna. The path is just over one mile and is paved for the majority of the way. If you’d like to extend your journey, there is an inspiring dirt trail you can follow.
Spring Picnic Spots In Idaho
Winter in Idaho means spending time outside snowshoeing, snowboarding, and even riding on a snowmobile. However, springtime in Idaho means getting outside, enjoying fresh air, wildflowers, and a long list of outdoor activities. One of our favorite things to do during this time of year is enjoy a picnic and the following are two of our favorite spring picnic spots in Idaho.
13. Redfish Lake
Redfish Lake is one of the most picturesque areas of the West and a spot that we love to visit throughout the year. However, the spring is delightful as you’ll still enjoy gorgeous views minus the large summer crowds. Redfish Lake is a fabulous destination for mountain biking, fishing, and hiking. You may even want to go for a scenic drive and admire the beauty that is all around.
14. Q’Emiln Park
Located in the panhandle, and just a short drive from Coeur d’Alene, is Q’emiln Park. This 78-acre park is right along the Spokane River and is packed with amenities for a day outside. Enjoy your picnic at the many tables along the shore and near the playground. Then, go on an adventure along one of the many trails. Q’emiln Park features up to 40 acres of trails for you to explore on a spring day.
