Idaho is a state with a rich and fascinating history, so of course, there’s bound to be some creepy stories regarding that history. In fact, there is an abundance of ghost stories that are just waiting to be uncovered in our state, but the one featured below may just be the creepiest of them all. This ghost story takes place at one of Idaho’s most beautiful state parks. This park boasts tons of natural beauty, which makes it easy to forget that this place is thought to be haunted. Additionally, many people don’t even realize this place has a haunted history until they experience it for themselves. The story of this haunting is pretty terrifying so hold tight!
Located near Athol, Farragut State Park is an oasis of natural beauty in North Idaho. The park is also known for its rich history since it's home to a former naval training center and military jail called The Brig. However, it's also the setting of one of Idaho's most terrifying ghost stories.
The naval training center was built in response to the bombing of Pearl Harbor during World War II. Constructed in just 11 months, it became a major training base for the U.S. Navy and trained over 293,000 sailors during its time.
However, The Brig also served as a confinement facility for unruly sailors—completed with jail cells, along with barred windows and gates. This region of The Brig is especially known for its paranormal activity, although it's unknown who or what exactly lingers here.
One unconfirmed legend tells the story of a German soldier who was brought here for interrogation. He was uncooperative at first but began to share information after some dubious methods of convincing him. It's believed that the soldier eventually died in custody.
According to the legend, the German soldier's body was left where he died and it is this area that has the most paranormal activity. In the past, night watchmen have reported unexplained noises, moving objects, flashing lights, and even the apparition of the soldier peering at them through the windows.
Rumor has it that The Brig was also the site of at least one homicide and one suicide. Although details are murky, one thing is for sure: there's definitely some odd energy here. Both visitors and employees have claimed to experience strange occurrences such as missing objects, the sounds of disembodied voices, and a general feeling of unease.
The next time you visit Farragut State Park, consider keeping an eye out for a figure in prison garb. You might just discover for yourself whether there is any truth to the story of the German soldier at The Brig.
