Even for city-dwellling Idahoans, beautiful natural areas are usually just a short drive away. Tubbs Hill in Coeur d’Alene is a great example of a place that is both full of natural beauty and easily accessible. In fact, a nice and short nature trail makes exploring Tubbs Hill a literal walk in the park. Coeur d'Alene boasts an abundance of outdoor destinations that are worth exploring, and Tubbs Hill is at the heart of them all. This lovely natural oasis is bordered by the downtown area on one side and Lake Coeur d'Alene on the other side.
Named after Tony Tubbs, a homesteader who owned a hotel at the base of the hill, Tubbs Hill has always been known for its stunning topography. Added to the city's park system during the 1960s, the hill boasts beach access, tranquil beauty, and even a wooden suspension bridge.
The 165-acre natural area boasts several miles of hiking trails. One of the most popular treks into this wild play land is the roughly 2-mile interpretive trail that leads you right around the perimeter of the hill.
The trailhead is easily accessible from Coeur d'Alene's downtown area. As you set off onto the trail, you'll be led straight into the beautiful forest setting, complete with snippets of views of Lake Coeur d'Alene through the trees.
Approximately two thirds of the way through the loop trail is when you'll be treated to the sight of a lovely little suspension bridge right in the thick of the forest landscape. This is definitely one of the most picturesque spots along the trail.
Although the trail is just a mere two miles, you'll find yourself taking plenty of breaks and rest stops in order to appreciate the beauty of this magnificent natural area. Luckily, the trail also leads to plenty of hidden beach spots which make for great rest areas!
