Idaho’s mountain towns become a winter wonderland each year after the snow falls. While there are many of these snowy destinations that are excellent places to explore and escape reality, McCall is one of the best. In fact, McCall is not only one of the snowiest towns in Idaho, but it is also one of our favorite getaway locations during this chilly time of year. Here’s why.
McCall began as a mining town, dating back to the late 1800s. Today, it is a resort town with a population of approximately 4,000.
This small town in Idaho sits at an elevation of approximately 5,000 feet and is surrounded by mountains, creating the most beautiful scenes - especially after a fresh snowfall. And there is no shortage of snow here as McCall’s average snowfall is more than 130 inches each year, making it one of the snowiest towns in Idaho.

Many individuals flock from all over to spend the day at Brundage Mountain. This is your classic ski resort, perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter activities. This resort averages more than 320 base area inches of snow each year.
However, a winter getaway in McCall is much more than a day on the slopes. You can bring your entire family and head to The Activity Barn, your all-in-one destination for winter activities in Idaho.
During the summer, this is a working cattle ranch, but in the winter, the Activity Barn is where you can enjoy everything from snow tubing to fat bikes.
Of course, you can always strap on a pair of snowshoes or cross-country skis and explore McCall and the surrounding area. Ponderosa State Park is one of our favorite locations for easy access to designated trails.
You can also head to the Manchester Ice and Event Centre in McCall for a day of ice skating, hockey, or ice bumper cars. This is an excellent family-friendly attraction that gets you moving, even if snow is falling heavily outside.
But you don’t need to stay active and busy during your winter getaway to McCall. If you’d prefer a weekend of peace, quiet, and relaxation, stop by one of the many spas and wellness centers in town and at the nearby resorts.
The perfect getaway includes the right accommodations, and there is no shortage of options in this Idaho mountain town. You can stay in destinations such as the Shore Lodge, a beautiful waterfront hotel on the shore of Payette Lake …

Whether you love winter sports or you just want a quiet escape from reality, plan a visit to McCall, one of the snowiest towns in Idaho. It truly is a magical getaway location.
